When the Finish Is the Story
A Bespoke Oak Garage Door for a Coastal Residence
Project Summary
Rundum Meir was commissioned to supply a bespoke side sliding garage door for a beautifully considered private residence on the English east coast. The property, a characterful combination of traditional flint and brick construction with contemporary extensions demanded a garage door that would sit naturally within its existing architectural language. The solution was a handcrafted oak door, finished with SiOO:X to achieve precisely that.
Challenge
Coastal environments present particular challenges for natural materials. Salt air, moisture and the relentless movement between wet and dry conditions accelerate weathering in ways that are often unpredictable and difficult to control. For the design team, the goal was clear — an oak door that would complement the building’s natural material palette and begin its life already in harmony with the weathered, silvered tones of the surrounding flint, timber cladding and landscape. Waiting years for oak to naturally silver was not possible and therefore not part of the plan.
Rundum Meir Solution
The answer lay in two things: the application of SiOO:X, a specialist timber treatment that significantly accelerates the natural silvering process of oak, and the use of stainless steel tracking.
SiOO:X is a patented, water-based silicate wood protection system developed in Sweden, where the demands of harsh coastal and Nordic climates have long shaped thinking about how natural timber should be treated and maintained. Unlike conventional stains or oils that sit on the surface of the wood, SiOO:X works as a two-part system.
The first component, applied twice, contains potassium silicate which penetrates deep into the microstructure of the timber, opening up the wood fibres and forming a network of silica crystals bonded within the wood itself rather than coating it from the outside.
The second component seals the system, creating a barrier against moisture penetration whilst still allowing the timber to breathe and respond naturally to its environment.
The result is a finish that does not peel, crack or trap moisture and one that works with the natural movement of timber rather than against it. Critically for this project, SiOO:X also dramatically accelerates the silvering process that oak undergoes naturally over time when exposed to the elements, compressing what would otherwise be years of gradual, often uneven weathering into a consistently toned, silver-grey finish achieved in a matter of weeks. For a coastal setting where the building has been designed to sit quietly within its landscape from the very first day, that is not a minor detail. It is fundamental to the integrity of the design.
Rather than arriving on site as warm, honey-toned new timber that would take years to settle into its surroundings, the door was finished with SiOO:X prior to installation, creating a cooler, already-silvered appearance on the exterior face. The contrast is immediately apparent. The inner face of the door retains the rich, warm character of natural oak, whilst the outer face has taken on the quieter, weathered tone that makes it feel entirely at home in a coastal setting from day one.
The door itself is manufactured to Rundum Meir’s exacting standards — a side sliding mechanism that disappears neatly along the internal wall when open, with precision-engineered curved tracking and the Rundum Meir MZ4 automation system providing seamless, reliable operation. A matching oak side door completes the elevation, ensuring the entire garage frontage reads smoothly as a single, coherent composition.
Results
The finished installation achieves exactly what the design intended. The oak door does not announce itself as new. It belongs to the building, to its setting, and to the coastal landscape around it. The SiOO:X treatment has done its work quietly and effectively, and the result is a door that is as considered in its finish as it is in its engineering.
