Most architectural training focuses on the elements of a building that get the most scrutiny at planning and design stage: the envelope, the fenestration, the roofline, and the junctions between materials. The garage door rarely makes that list. It tends to be treated as a fixture rather than a feature, specified late and considered even later or last.

That’s an odd pattern, given how much work a garage door is actually doing. On many residential facades, it is one of the largest single moving elements of the entire building, directly affecting how the elevation reads, how the building performs, and how it’s experienced and utilised every single day. Very little of the training available to architects addresses it properly, either as a functional component or as a design element in its own right.

Rethinking the Garage Door is our RIBA-approved CPD, developed to close exactly that gap. Rather than treating the garage door as an afterthought, the session explores how bespoke garage door systems can add a unique dimension to a building’s functionality and appearance, positioning it as a genuine design decision rather than a late-stage specification line.

The CPD is RIBA-approved and built on the RIBA Core Curriculum, giving architects and specifiers a structured, credentialed session rather than an informal product talk. It has been designed to sit comfortably within existing CPD requirements while offering something most practices haven’t had the chance to properly consider before.

Rethinking the Garage Door

On the functionality side, the session covers material behaviour across timber, aluminium, steel and glass, mechanism selection, thermal and acoustic performance, and the practical realities of specifying a door that needs to perform reliably for decades, not just look right on the day of handover. On the appearance side, it looks at how a bespoke door can be integrated into a facade as a considered architectural feature, shaping proportion, sightlines and material continuity rather than interrupting them.

For architects and specifiers, the value is straightforward: a better understanding of an element that’s often under-considered, and a practical framework for treating the garage door with the same design intention as any other significant part of the building’s fabric. It’s CPD that changes how the next specification gets approached, not just an hour ticked off a requirement.
