ARCHITECTURAL OAK GARAGE DOORS

Architectural oak garage doors are a popular choice for architects and homeowners, offering a perfect blend of functionality and aesthetic appeal.

Garage doors can be overlooked in the design of high-value residential properties, with features such as the cladding, windows and landscaping taking precedent. Yet, as a prominent feature on a façade, they play a critical role in shaping a home’s architectural character.

For architects working on bespoke build projects, specifying architectural oak garage doors presents an opportunity to blend natural material qualities with technical performance, creating a solution that meets both design vision and client expectations.

At Rundum Meir, we have been handcrafting wooden garage doors for more than 50 years. Our oak doors are specified on some of the UK’s most distinctive residential projects, from heritage restorations to contemporary new builds, because they combine visual impact with structural integrity and modern performance.

Benefits of specifying oak as a garage door material

Oak has been used in British architecture for centuries, and for good reason. It is durable, versatile, and brings a warmth that other materials struggle to replicate. When specified for garage doors, oak provides:

Longevity and strength

Oak is a dense hardwood, making it highly resistant to impact, wear, and the UK’s variable weather conditions. Properly treated, oak doors can last for decades without losing their integrity.

Thermal and acoustic performance

Garage doors are increasingly located adjacent to habitable spaces. Oak offers inherent insulating qualities, which, when combined with modern door engineering, can help projects meet or exceed Part L (conservation of fuel and power) and Part E (resistance to sound) of the UK Building Regulations.

Sustainability credentials

Responsibly sourced oak supports low embodied carbon strategies, aligning with the UK Government’s Net Zero Carbon goals. As a renewable material, it offers a better circular economy profile than steel or composite alternatives.

Architectural consistency

Oak can be matched with cladding, windows, or front doors to achieve seamless façades, a growing trend in luxury residential architecture.

High-value projects often come with complex garage door requirements. Large openings, narrow reveals, or arched entrances make it difficult to integrate standard garage doors without compromising the architectural intent.

SIDE SLIDING
RUNDUM ORIGINAL

A real statement piece for any high-end residential or commercial property. Handcrafted in oak, our Rundum Meir Original Garage Doors effortlessly combine stunning aesthetics with premium functionality, in a truly bespoke and distinctive garage door design.

These doors can follow straight or curved tracks, making them ideal for arched or non-linear profiles. Panels are constructed from the same piece of timber to ensure colour continuity and matching grain.

The system can be fully automated, even on curved installations, while maintaining a seamless external appearance.

SIDE SLIDING
SECTIONAL DOORS

Our Side Sliding Sectional Doors are hand-made from oak (and other premium timbers) to create a truly stunning architectural statement piece.

The oak panels are suspended from a top track and slot perfectly into either a traditional u-channel with drainage facilities or surface mounted T-bar at the foot of the door.

They are an excellent choice where ceiling space is restricted or where minimal disruption to overhead architectural elements is required. Partial opening provides convenient pedestrian access without compromising security.

OVERHEAD
SECTIONAL DOORS

For projects requiring a vertical lift solution, our oak overhead sectional doors slide upwards into ceiling-mounted tracks.

They deliver smooth, quiet operation and excellent insulation properties, making them suitable for garages that form part of the home’s thermal envelope.

Fully bespoke, they can be tailored to match façade details or provide striking contrasts.

SPECIALIST
PROJECTS

Some projects demand one-off solutions. Whether it is integrating oak doors into a listed property, spanning unusually wide openings, or coordinating with glazing and cladding systems, our technical team develops bespoke designs that meet complex requirements.

We have created oak doors for award-winning projects across the UK, each tailored to its architectural context.

Bespoke oak garage doors project – Round-House Garage in Surrey

The Round-house garage project in Surrey involved the design of a roundhouse-style garage as part of the renovation and extension of a Grade II listed property.

The architect designed the garage to replicate a traditional coach house, using a curved form to minimise visual impact and better blend with the local Surrey vernacular.

The project incorporated curved, solid oak Rundum Original doors that are both top-hung and automated. In total, there are four automated bi-parting doors, each 5 metres wide, spanning two curved openings of 10 metres each.

Special care was taken to ensure the doors visually matched the external cladding, maintaining the building’s cohesive appearance within the context of the historic property originally designed by Harold Falkner.
